WHEN:
Anytime and for as long as you choose to celebrate on Sunday, March 10, 2019 – or throughout the month of March! In honor of the Stay Home and Read a Book Ball’s 31st  Anniversary, we’ll be celebrating all month long.

WHERE:
Wrapped in a blanket by the fireplace, at your local park, on the train or bus, or anywhere the pages lead you!

HOW:
Grab a book (or multiple), and read! Support the Los Angeles Library’s teen programming by donating what you would have spent out at a fancy gala! Share your love for the Library on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and tell us what you’ll be reading –don’t forget to include #StayHomeandRead.

ATTIRE:
Black tie and ball gowns, or pajamas…definitely pajamas.

FOOD & DRINK:
Milk & cookies, wine & cheese – anything goes!

GUESTS:
Loved ones, friends, children, family, your book club members, cats, dogs -all are welcome!

All Stay Home and Read a Book Ball contributions are fully tax-deductible. No goods, services, or benefits are provided, and is not a contribution towards Membership.

Susan Orlean | 2019 Stay Home and Read a Book Ball Chair

Susan Orlean has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992. She is the author of seven books, including Rin Tin Tin, Saturday Night, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Academy Award–winning film Adaptation. Her most recent, The Library Book, is the story of the 1986 fire at the Los Angeles Public Library. She lives with her family in Los Angeles and the Hudson Valley.

I first started going to the Los Angeles Public Library when I was a very little girl. I loved the Children’s Room with the beautiful murals. I would look through the books (I was still too young to read them!), while my mom studied. Over all these years, I’ve used the resources at the library to do research for my books. I wouldn’t be the woman, mother, or writer I am without our beautiful and inspiring library.

Amazing news: You don’t have to get dressed up! Or make conversation! Or get stuck at a table for overlong speeches! You can curl up in bed with a book and thereby support teen programming so that future generations will still want to curl up in bed with books!

For four decades I have sailed on the sea of books at Central Library. Thus perusing grand oceans of prose by the greats while shining the light of learning elsewhere. Staying at home and reading for me is the way a swimmer caught in a riptide feels when greeting dry land.
