Libraries democratize information; digitizing that info makes it even more accessible. It also preserves rare and historical collections—more than half of which still need to be added to the LAPL’s already robust online archive. Patrons can access the Library’s diverse digital collections that tell Los Angeles’s story through photographs, autographs, fruit-crate labels, menus, and many other fascinating items.

The Library’s archive of more than three million photos (only 167,000 of which are currently in its searchable online collection) tell the story of Los Angeles with collections from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Security Pacific, Shades of L.A., and photographer Rolland Curtis. Our city’s more recent history is captured in the Los Angeles COVID-19 Community Archive, featuring the photos and stories submitted by Angelenos during a time of lockdowns, economic downturn, and political upheaval.
