About Us

The Council

The Council is our premiere fundraising group, supporting the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library and 72 branches. Since its founding in 1994 by the late Flora Thornton, The Council has raised over $35 million. This membership group produces the Council Literary Series and the biennial Council Literary Feasts, and provides significant support to critical Library programs that promote literacy skills, student success, and technological access.

“I believe in the transformative power of books and literacy. Libraries are gateways to imagination, learning, and opportunities for all ages. I’m honored to champion our Library’s vital role in inspiring and empowering our community.”

Beth Michelson, The Council President 2024-2026
