The LAPL is helping Angelenos meet their literacy goals, whether it’s to read a newspaper or get a better job. Adult learners—both native speakers and ESL—are paired with one-on-one tutors to improve their English reading and writing skills. Multilingual tutors are available for those who want to up their English skills while using their native language.

Library patrons also have access to free workshops, conversation practice sessions, and online tools for independent practice. The program’s Family Literacy services offer adult learners with young kids support and family experiences to cultivate early literacy practices.

Adult Literacy Services at the Los Angeles Public Library is supported in part by funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library. Other generous donors include:

  • Caroline Singleton Adult Literacy Endowment
  • Flora L. Thornton Foundation
  • Dean Hansell Endowed Fund for Adult Literacy
  • Sharon Oxborough Endowment for Adult Literacy
