Check Out Mobile Hotspots From the Library

The Tech2go Hotspot Loan Program provides internet access to families and households that lack these services. The mobile hotspots are easy to use and allow users to connect their laptop, tablet, and other Wi-Fi enabled devices to the internet. Patron must have a library card in good standing to participate in this program.

How do I check out a device?

Call one of the participating locations to reserve a hotspot or add yourself to the waiting list. Once a hotspot becomes available, you will be able to pick it up at that location.

Who can check out a device?

Anyone that has a valid library card. If you don’t have a library card, you can apply in person at one of our library locations. Student success cards are not eligible.

How long can I keep a hotspot?

You can borrow a Wi-Fi hotspot for six weeks. Overdue hotspots will have internet access deactivated within 24 hours beyond their due date.

Where can I return a Wi-Fi hotspot?

A Wi-Fi hotspot must be returned to the Los Angeles Public Library location where it was checked out. They can be returned in book drops. You must return the device with all the original packaging and accessories. Please fully charge the battery before you return the device.

How do I renew it?

If there are no existing holds, the hotspot can be renewed online or by contacting your local branch.

What if I lose or return a Wi-Fi hotspot late?

If the hotspot is lost, please contact the location where you checked it out immediately. The replacement fee is $100.

What if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged?

Please report the incident to the library where the device was borrowed. You may still be responsible for the $100 replacement fee.

Can I reserve a hotspot?

Yes, you must call one of the participating branches to reserve one or be added to the waiting list.

How much does it cost?

Borrowing and using the device is free! However, check out our overdue and lost policy below.

What if I need help with a Wi-Fi hotspot?

If you need help using a Wi-Fi hotspot, contact the library where it was checked out, Monday - Friday 10 am to 4:30 pm. Find your library's telephone number in our directory.

Can I use the hotspot when I travel outside the United States?

No, the hotspots only work in the U.S.

Can I use the hotspot to make phone call or send/receive text messages?

No, the hotspots can only be used to connect to your Wi-Fi enabled device such as laptop and tablets.

Is there any data limit?

In general there is no data limit. However, the service provider may lower speed or limit the amount of data that its network can handle for a short time.

If hotspot prompted to update software or firmware, what should I do?

The hotspot periodically receives software updates from the service provider. You can accept the update, which may take a few minutes.

Is information about my Internet usage tracked by the Library or the service provider?

LAPL does not have access to or collect specific usage data, and does not provide patron information to the service provider.

Will I be asked for my personal information when I browse the internet using the hotspot?

LAPL will not ask you any information when you browse the internet using the hotspot.

Content is not filtered by the hotspots, please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parent to monitor their children in their internet usage when utilizing these devices.

¿Por cuánto tiempo puedo tener el dispositivo de internet móvil?

Lo puedes tomar prestado por seis semanas. Si no es entregado a tiempo, el servicio de internet se cortará dentro de 24 horas de su fecha de vencimiento.

¿Dónde puedo regresar el dispositivo?

Debes de regresar el dispositivo a la Biblioteca Pública de Los Ángeles donde fue obtenido. Pueden ser devueltos en el buzón de libros. Debes de regresar el artículo con todos los accesorios y contenido original. Favor de cargar la batería completamente antes de devolverlo.

¿Cómo lo puedo renovar?

Si no hay lista de espera, el dispositivo puede ser renovado en línea o comunicandote con tu sucursal local.

¿Cuánto cuesta?

Tomar prestado y usar el dispositivo es gratis. Te recomendamos leer nuestra política de pérdidas y recargos.

¿Qué sucede si pierdo o devuelvo un dispositivo tarde?

No, los dispositivos solo funcionan dentro de los Estados Unidos.

No, los dispositivos solo se pueden utilizar para conectar otros dispositivos electrónicos como tabletas y celulares al internet.

¿Hay algún límite de datos?

En general no hay límite de datos. Sin embrago, el proveedor puede reducir la velocidad o limitar la cantidad de datos disponibles en su red durante un periodo de tiempo corto.

Si el dispositivo pide que actualice el programa o firmware, ¿qué debo de hacer?

El dispositivo recibe periódicamente actualizaciones de programación del proveedor de servicio. Puedes aceptar la actualización, la cual puede tardar unos minutos.

¿La información sobre mi uso de internet es rastreada por la biblioteca o el proveedor de servicios?

LAPL no tiene acceso o recopila datos de uso específicos y no proporciona información de cliente al proveedor de servicios.

¿Se me pedirá información personal cuando navego por internet mientras uso el dispositivo?

LAPL no te pedirá ninguna información cuando navegas por internet mientras usas el dispositivo.
