We believe libraries represent the best of our ideals—welcoming all and providing free access to information and services that enrich, educate, and empower patrons. Through our advocacy, we promote the Los Angeles Public Library’s mission as well as the urgent cause of protecting libraries nationwide. It’s important we speak up now for the health of libraries—big and small—everywhere.
UPDATE AS OF DECEMBER 3, 2025
In March 2025, an executive order threatened the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS)—the only federal agency that supports libraries nationwide—signaling devastating effects for libraries across the nation, especially for rural and tribal libraries that rely on IMLS for essential programs and resources.
Following the November 21 federal court decision in a lawsuit brought against President Trump by 21 states, the IMLS announced that it had reinstated all the agency’s grants, including those to libraries and library organizations across the country on December 3.
We celebrate this decisive victory, but the fight is not finished, as the administration can still appeal court decisions and the future of IMLS is not guaranteed.
While LAPL provides services through local funding and thanks to LFLA supporters, the library’s ability to innovate, lead, and be more accessible has been enhanced by IMLS-funded grants. Vital programs that improve mental and physical wellness for older adults, expand sensory-friendly spaces for neurodiverse youth, and promote play-based early literacy in Los Angeles are supported by IMLS grants.
We urge library lovers everywhere to stay engaged and continue advocating for our libraries.
