Frequently asked questions

Robin Coste Lewis

“There is no place I’d rather be than traveling within the pages of a really fine book. Books make it possible for the reader to travel to any place or time, and all while sitting very, very still. What a magical object! And the best part of all, all of this power and energy fits within the landscape of your own two hands. Stay home, open a book: fly!”

National Book Award-winning Author and Poet Laureate of Los Angeles

“Please join me in staying home and reading a book while supporting the Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ Stay Home and Read a Book Ball. No actual attendance required, a modest donation would be greatly appreciated!”

LeVar Burton

“Here’s to the best party of the year! A guest list to die for, table companions to delight and inform, surprise and charm–the world’s wittiest, wisest, most worldly crew.  Three cheers for the Stay Home and Read a Book Ball!”

Actor/ Educator

“Libraries are my second home when I am lost or found or in great need of a place to write a poem.

With first-time writers and artists, in 1974 I organized my first cultural program at the San Diego Public Library — I discovered the beauty of true human expression and delight.”

Janet Fitch

“The lamp-light is at the right angle, the couch is soft, the blanket is warm, a mug of Irish breakfast is on the coffee table, it’s raining outside and I’m not looking for my boots; I’m going to stay home reading this novel set in Berlin at the same time supporting cultural programs at the library. How great is that”
