Join us for an exclusive, curator-led walkthrough of Luceros y Penumbras, the Guinness World Records-recognized largest pop-up book ever created. Held before the Library opens to the public, this special event offers Council Members a rare opportunity to experience the exhibition in an intimate setting while learning about the inspiration, design, and remarkable engineering behind this extraordinary work.

Todd Lerew, Director of Special Projects at the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and the exhibition’s curator, will guide attendees through the installation and share the story of its creation.

Created by Los Angeles artist and printmaker Daniel González, with paper engineering by Matthew Reinhart and full-scale engineering and fabrication by Goodnight & Co., Luceros y Penumbras was commissioned as the centerpiece of the Richard J. Riordan Central Library’s Centennial Celebration. Inspired by the Library’s enduring “light of learning,” the monumental installation explores memory, culture, discovery, and the spirit of Los Angeles through two enormous pop-up spreads.

The installation measures approximately 31 feet by 20 feet when opened, with paper structures rising more than 11 feet tall. It weighs over 1,800 pounds and is constructed entirely from traditional bookmaking materials, including paper, adhesive, and fabric. The exhibition is complemented by a selection of rare movable books from the Library’s Toy Movable Collection.

Stacy Lieberman

As President and CEO of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles (LFLA), Stacy Lieberman is an innovative and inclusive leader whose career dwells at the intersection of arts and culture, lifelong learning, storytelling, and equitable access. Stacy guides the Foundation’s philanthropic and public-facing priorities to serve the Los Angeles Public Library, embracing the notion that libraries are beacons of democracy where everyone is welcome.
