Council Literary Series | 100 Years of Stories: Children’s Authors, Crafts, and More

For the first time, the Council Literary Series will feature a family-focused program as part of the Library’s Centennial Celebration. Bring your grandchildren or young readers to Central Library before it opens to the public for a special morning celebrating children’s literature in the beautiful Rotunda and Children’s Literature Department.

The program will feature readings and conversation with three acclaimed children’s authors and illustrators: Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator and author LeUyen Pham, whose work includes beloved collaborations with Julianne Moore and her forthcoming book Shrinking Violet, releasing at the end of March; award-winning author Nell Cross Beckerman, whose books include the Los Angeles–inspired From Park to Playa, and whose newest title Forests was named a 2026 Notable Book by the American Library Association; and artist and writer Mirelle Ortega, whose book Magic: Once Upon a Faraway Land received a 2023 Pura Belpré Award Illustration Honor and an International Latino Book Award.

Families will enjoy author readings, book signing, and hands-on crafts and creative activities throughout the morning, along with refreshments and the opportunity to connect with fellow Council families. Children will also have the chance to read aloud to BARK Reading Dogs, a beloved volunteer program that helps young readers build confidence by reading to calm, non-judgmental certified therapy dogs.
