“Mary Shelley’s masterpiece is rife with questions that burn brightly in my soul: existential, tender, savage, doomed questions that only burn in a young mind and only adults and institutions believe they can answer. For me, only monsters hold the secrets I long for."
- Guillermo Del Toro
An Exclusive Evening of Film & Conversation Benefiting the Los Angeles Public Library
In advance of the Hollywood premiere of Frankenstein, join us for an extraordinary evening as Academy Award–winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro shares scenes from his highly anticipated adaptation of the 1818 Mary Shelley classic and discusses with antiquarian bookseller Ken Sanders the creation of the film set for limited theatrical release ahead of its November 2025 Netflix release.
Hosted by Netflix in association with Rare Books LA and the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, the proceeds from this special event will benefit the Library Foundation of Los Angeles (LFLA) in its mission to provide critical support for the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL), including the long-term recovery of the LAPL Palisades Branch, which was destroyed in the January fires.
Fulfilling his lifelong dream, Del Toro adapted Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
This event will be held on Friday, October 3, beginning at 6:00 pm. Hollywood location will be shared with attendees upon registration. Secure your spot now!
Rare Books LA Union Station – October 4-5, 2025
To round out the weekend, a two-day antiquarian book fair is being held at Los Angeles Union Station hosted by Rare Books LA. More than 50 exhibitors from London, New York, and everywhere in between are showcasing an electrifying array of antiquarian books, historical material, book arts, and more.
Attendees are encouraged to hop onboard Metrolink, Metro Rail, or Amtrak for this transit-friendly book fair.
If your are unable to attend this conversation, Rare Books LA is offering a Frankenstein Fundraiser ticket for $40, which includes two-day admission to the book fair, a movie poster, and a limited-edition bookmark from Netflix, as well as an entry into a drawing to win a pair of tickets for the Hollywood premiere of the film in October. 100% of the profits will benefit the LFLA as it works to sustain the LAPL.
